South Yorkshire Police ‘only want midweek derbies’

South Yorkshire Police says it doesn’t want to police the Sheffield derby on a weekend.

The force said it had been in touch with the English Football League asking for support in moving the games to weeknights.

Sheffield Wednesday’s home game with Sheffield United in March has been moved from a Saturday 15:00 kick-off to a Monday evening.

The 2017/2018 fixture has been most expensive policing operation in England with it costing £203,000.

The home club was billed for £41,000.

Quote Message: I have outlined to the English Football League and clubs our plans to support our footballing communities, while maintaining our high levels of service for the public whom we serve. This support is achievable and sustainable if derby fixtures take place on weeknights.” from DCC Mark Roberts South Yorkshire Police
