Are “Derbies” a Panacea for Problems?
The Hearts v Hibernian match at Tynecastle last night presented both a couple of old a new challenge for Safety Officers. First off the age-old problem of coin throwing resulted in Hibs manager Neil Lennon being struck in the face by a £1 coin thrown at him. I think we agree that this is one of the most cowardly and most difficult of crimes to detect. Many of us will have experienced this particularly across segregation lines and usually in matches of a “derby” magnitude. This is a situation where a quality CCTV product like Dallmeier’s Panomera comes in very useful in helping us detect those responsible. You will see from the link that the ordinary OB cameras only showed Neil Lennon’s reaction after being struck by the coin.
The second incident at this match was a pitch incursion where the supporter involved was taken care of by stewards. Well done to the G4S staff for not allowing the offender to get too far onto the field. We have seen a noticeable increase in problems of this nature including recent incursions at Anfield and Old Trafford.
The new one on me was where the Hibs goalkeeper went to retrieve the ball for a goal kick and was punched by a Hearts supporter.
