More Reports of Racism Over the Weekend – Millwall FC & Sol Campbell

It is becoming almost a regular theme in news items this year. Football and Society seems to be beset by what many see as a throwback to the seventies as a set of fans denigrate the other’s origins in terms of Millwall and Everton and also, once again, Sol Campbell became the victim of homophobic comments.

Sol has been the victim of such abuse for many years, without foundation and it is disappointing that this type of chanting reared its head again when his team, Macclesfield Town FC played  played at Cheltenham over the weekend.

Our colleague, John Newsham, reported on a  violent incident at Millwall on Sunday, where an Everton supporter received life-changing injuries as a result of a knife wound to his face. Images shown on various news channels were shocking. Images also emerged on last night’s TV News channels of grouped racist abuse of Everton fans which included the denigration of Asian communities as well as those of Everton’s home city of Liverpool.

I recall these chants from the 1970s and also when fans referred to the Muppets, which at the time was a new form of television entertainment.

The Football Association is looking into the matter, naturally, and our good friends at “Kick it Out” have said that there is no place for any of this not only in football, but also Society at large. Will it ever stop?
