Hillsborough safety chief was ‘too busy’, trial told
Sheffield Wednesday showed a reluctance to appoint a safety manager when inspectors visited two years before the Hillsborough disaster, a court heard yesterday.
Graham Mackrell, 69, the club secretary who was the named safety officer during the FA Cup semi-final on April 15, 1989 when 95 Liverpool fans died, implied he would be “too busy entertaining corporate clients” to do the job, former environmental health officer David Moore said. “I was quite surprised by his response,” added Mr Moore, who told Preston Crown Court the need for an appointed officer was brought up at a “difficult” meeting in August 1987.
Mackrell denies contravening safety rules. He is standing trial alongside match commander David Duckenfield, 74, who denies gross negligence manslaughter. The trial continues.
