Watson’s Way!

Bubba Watson claims his 2nd Green Jacket.

Bubba Watson gained a second Green Jacket at Augusta, edging out the promising Jordan Spieth and Swede Jonas Blixt.

Watson & son celebrate with the crowd.

Bubba confessed throughout the week to have regained his tournament focus following the distractions that ran throughout 2013 relating to his maiden Masters victory in 2012.  With 1 Win and 2 seconds on the PGA Tour already in 2014 prior to the Masters, the unlikely Bubba is now the standout established player on the PGA Tour.

As always, Bubba was gracious in victory, orthodox in his love and passion for the game, in contrast to his unconventional style on the course.  “I play because I love the game. This game and its values brought my family closer together growing up.  I don’t play so that people can tell me how great I am”.

Rory Mcllory & Jeff Knox

Bubba’s victory comments were also in contrast to the pre-tournament forecast by one of the other marquee names of the Tour.  Rory McIlory readily identified a gap in the position of World Superstar (In the absence of the injured Tiger Woods), and suggested that he himself might be best equipped to fit the bill!   The irony of Rory’s unfashionable draw for the 3rd round draw – with the local member Jeff Knox – could hardly have been lost on Rory as the first player out for the weekend’s action.

Mickelson misses the 2014 cut.

Whilst Watson is a popular and charismatic winner, the manner of his victory stroll through the back-nine on Sunday at the Masters may well be highlighting a shift in focus of the game’s top players.

The Masters has traditionally been eagerly awaited as the curtain raiser to a 4 month major season ending with the USPGA in the first week of August.   Now the riches of the FEDEX Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour have extended the golfing season by 4 tournament weeks from August into mid-September.  Top ranking points and lucrative sponsorship deals demand that top players are fit and ready to go for start of the Playoff Series.  The revised playing schedules of the world’s best players to accommodate the Playoffs arguably has compromised the game’s first Major in Spring.

Miguel Angel Jimenez

Freddie Couples

Cameo performances by the over 50’s such as Couples, Jimenez and Langer, in addition to impressive rookie performances by Spieth and Walker are noteworthy, but hardly replace the age old duels of golfing greats such as Faldo, Norman and Nicklaus slugging it out down the stretch on Augusta’s famed Amen corner.

Payne Stewart – 1999 US Open at Pinehurst

Jack Nicklaus – Masters 1986

So here’s to Bubba Watson showing a well travelled way, and roll on June for the 2014 US Open at the Donald Ross masterpiece Pinehurst No.2!

Evian Championship 2013 – Major Event

The first Major to be held in continental Europe, The Evian Championship will take place from September 12 – 15, 2013.

In anticipation of its new status, and to provide the world’s best lady golfers with a fitting stage, the former Evian Masters Course is being completely transformed whilst respecting the distinctive personality of the Evian Golf Club and its values.

The New Championship Course at Evian will open from July 1, 2013 – presenting guests at Hotel Royal & Ermitage Hotel with a fantastic opportunity to play the Major course ahead of the world’s leading lady golfers.

The new Evian Resort Golf Club is located just a few minutes’ walk from the Royal and Ermitage hotels. This 18-hole championship course (6 054 m, 72 par) is one of the most beautiful in Europe and offers magnificent views over both lake and mountains.

All the greens are in the final stages of design and five holes undergo a total overhaul in order to create a suitably high-level course – fit for Yani Sang, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and company!

For those with a competitive vibe, the Evian Championship Series is an exclusive open tournament for men and ladies, taking place from August 23-25, just before the course closes for final preparation in advance of the Evian Championship proper.  Packages include a 2-night stay at Hotel Royal or Ermitage, with preferred rates to extend your stay at Evian before or after this amateur tournament.

Best flights to Evian are for Geneva Airport, with private transfers available on request with your Ascot Golf package.

Book early to ensure availability, as availability is restricted from the course reopening on July 1 until August 28 when the course closes for the Evian Championship.  The course reopens to visitors following the Evian Championship from October 6.

Cyprus Golf Update 2013

Golf in Cyprus is trending upwards for visitors staying at InterContinental Aphrodite Hills in 2013 – thanks to an innovative golf-around agreement now in place between Aphrodite Hills Resort, Elea and the new course at Secret Valley.

Following healthy rainfall over the winter months, the golf courses in Cyprus are now in great shape for the summer holidays ahead.  Aphrodite Hills Golf Course is one Europe’s hidden gems located overlooking the Mediterranean, weaving it’s way around the luxury villas of Aphrodite Hills Estate with expansive canyons and century old olive trees lining the way.  Each round is a journey to remember, not least for the excellent quality of the golf course.

Elea Golf

The Faldo design at Elea Estate is located just 15 minutes from Aphrodite Hills, with shuttle transfers available for just €10.  Elea is impressive not just for the high quality and service at the clubhouse, but primarily due to the strategic and varied design that Faldo created.   The setting is more rustic that resort, and each round played helps the golfer to develop an approach to tackle Faldo’s unique challenge.

Located alongside Aphrodite Hills, is Secret Valley. The long awaitied Tony Jacklin Signature Course will open from September 1, 2013 to complete a fantastic 3-course rota.   Early reviews suggests that the Jacklin course exceeds expectations in terms of layout, whilst also providing some thrills and spills that will keep golfers coming back for more!

For those seeking a 4th round in Cyprus, then the newley renovated Minthis Hills also provides an worthwhile challenge. Located just 30 minutes from Aphrodite Hills, the new Minthis Hills clubhouse provides an excellent viewing point of the golf course and surrounding coastline.    The golf course renovation has also been very well received, transforming Minthis Hills into a serious challenger on the Cyprus golf circuit.

Minthis Hills

Whatever your favourite golf course on Cyprus, Aphrodite Hills Resort is certainly the island’s No.1 Leisure Resort.  This status has been further enhanced in 2013 by offering a Deluxe All-Inclusive package with food & refreshments provided throughout the day not just the InterContinental Hotel, but also nearby at Village Square, The Golf Clubhouse and at the resort Beachclub (Zias).   With an extensive entertainment programme lined up for summer months, a golfing holiday at Aphrodite Hills, Cyprus has never offered so much!

Aussie Rules at Augusta!

Adam Scott - Masters Champion 2013

Adam Scott – Masters Champion 2013

The 2013 Masters served up a memorable cliamax as Adam Scott overcome a stirring fightback by Angel Cabrera to become Australia’s first US Masters champion.

Scott’s joy was palpable, witnessed on the 72nd hole when his 20ft putt appeared to seal victory and again on the 2nd play-off hole to finally break open his Major account.

While the golfing fraternity lined up to express its genuine congratulations to one of the game’s good guys, other events taking place in and around Augusta this year have created some concern in terms of the direction that the game.

Tiger Drop

The Rules of Golf in particular have been placed under the spotlight, concerning their interpretation and application.   For a game that is reknowned for its integrity and for the responsibility it places on those that play,  the 2013 Masters created a precedent by permitting the World No.1 to flout the rules for his advantage.   The traditional approach to applying the rules could not have been better illustrated when also at the Masters, the youngest ever competitor was penalised for playing too slowly.

Winning Putt!

That Adam Scott gained victory at this year’s Masters also serves a reminder of the recent debate regarding the legality of long putter.  For the first time in the game’s history, the possibility has been raised that the PGA Tour of America may over-ride any revision to the rules in respect of “anchoring” the putting stroke.

It may have escaped the Masters’ headlines that Vijay Singh completed the tournament in 42nd place.   As a recent user of the banned artificial stimulant “deer-antler spray”, the governing bodies have yet to act against Singh for this clear violation of the rules and conduct.  There is of course the difficult matter of policing this rule on-going, and the possibility that several other prominent players on tour have taken similar substances.   The notion however that golfers remain a breed-apart from other sportsmen, proud to call a penalty on themselves for the good of the game, appears to a principle in decline.

Vijay at Augusta

Furthermore, the manner and etiquette in which the world’s top golfers play also appears to be in question.  On the 72nd hole, Adam Scott celebrated unreservedly for victory – creating a scence reminiscent of the infamous 1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline when team celebrations that followed a putt holed by Justin Leonard prevented Jose Maria Olazabal from being given a fair chance to hole his own crucial putt. At the Masters on the 72nd hole, Scott’s friend Angel Cabrera still had a chance to tie, when Scott prematurely celebrated in victory in front of him.

In the lead up to the Masters Ian Poulter declared that it was his time to “slip on the the Green jacket” and following the conclusion of the event, Brandt Snedeker foretold that “my day will come for sure at Augusta”.    These top players (so far without Major success) appear to be adept at promoting their own “destiny” without a thought for their fellow competitors, lady luck, or their own shortcomings to date!

Bobby Jones

Theses soundings and recent brushes with the Rules all appear in conflict with the mantra of fomer champion and co-designer of Augusta National,  Bobby Jones – “it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts“.

The remainder of the 2013 season might well challenge both the governing bodies & leading players to preserve the Rules and ideals of our ancient game.

SEVE’S RYDER CUP

Europe Wins!

The 2012 Ryder Cup could easily have lead to the end of the Ryder Cup spirit as we have known it.  The European 12-man Team comprised for the first time of 7 US PGA Tour members – all of whom were fully engaged in the Fedex Cup playoffs in the 5 weeks before Medinah.

The remaining 5 players on the team [Lawrie, Hanson, Kaymer, Colsearts and Molinari] are  members of the European Tour only and were set to play just a minor role in the outcome of the Trophy.     Whereas the European Team famously once set off together for US Ryder Cups on Concorde from London, this year’s team mostly arrived at Chicago by private jet from Florida.  The 2012 Team Europe identity was not as strong as it may once have been.

Poults & Sergio

The opening Friday & Saturday sessions  suggested that Captain Olazabal’s call to his team to embrace the spirit of Seve was not being heard, save for the individual heroics of Poulter and Colsaerts who stood strong in the face of the US onslaught.

By Sunday however the winds had changed as Paul Azinger tweeted “the Europeans had somehow managed to clone Poulters overnight”.   The usual calm play of Rose, McIlroy and Donald had ingited into a fist pumping and slam-dunking display in the style of new leader Poulter.   But with Navy Blue and White abound, nobody was in any doubt on Sunday as to the raison d’etre of this new generation Team Europe.

Hanson & Molinari

The record comeback for Europe from 10-6 down on Saturday to winning 14.5-13.5 on Sunday at Medinah sealed a perfect tribute to Seve.

By completing victory in this manner, the legacy and stature of the Ryder Cup is also secured for many more years to come.  In his life, Seve inspired belief into the European Team and established the Ryder Cup as the premier competition in World Golf.  Now, his spirit has created a new mission and higher challenge for all Europeans to follow.  No longer is the European Team competing to represent their distant home Tour.  Team Europe’s new identify is the philosophy and style that Seve represented in golf.

The lasting words from close friend Jose Maria ring loudest in the aftermath of the event.  “Every man dies but not every man lives”.  Long live the spirit of Seve and the Ryder Cup vision that Ollie brought to  Team Europe in 2012.  Special mention must also be extended to the great American Team, defeated this time, but forever setting the benchmark against which Team Europe ideals can be challenged in Seve’s Ryder Cup.

Captain Olazabal

Ernie’s Sprint to Victory

Ernie Els – 2012 Open Champion

Ernie Els’ sublime back nine of 32 at Royal Lytham & St Annes saw him overturn a 6 shot deficit against Adam Scott to be crowned 2012 Champion Golfer.  Ernie’s inspiration included his autistic son Ben, his charity foundation “Els for Autism”, Nelson Mandela, and, down the stretch, the memory and spirit of Seve Ballesteros.  Els has this year been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame and his impressive career now includes an award winning Wine-business and an ever increasing Golf Course design portfolio.   The Ernie Els brand has never been stronger.

Brant Snedeker

The British Open victory has completed for Els a year-long quest to re-establish himself among the game’s elite.  With narrow misses at Innisbrook, Texas and the US Open, Lytham offered Ernie a relatively stress free ride through the final 36-holes in the slipstream of tournament leaders Snedeker and Scott.   All 3-majors this year in fact have been won in similar fashion with front-runners Louis Oosthuizen and Jim Furyk succumbing to the unique pressures that accompany the final round leaders at the Masters and US Open, with Bubba and Webb sprinting late to victory.

Adam Scott

Ernie’s incredible final hole birdie afterall was merely a hopeful bid to get into a play-off, whereas Scott’s every last round shot was played with the pressures of being in control of his own Major destiny.

With the final major of the season awaiting at Kiawah Island, South Carolina from August 9-12, the golfing world awaits on whether 2012 will be remembered as the year of the Sprinter!
