Masters Fashions

Adam Scott – 2013 Champion

The current PGA Tour shutdown has afforded an opportunity to revisit a back catalogue of Major tournament coverage.

Seve Ballesteros – Masters Champion 1983

The Masters’ Sunday viewing is almost as captivating today as it was watching live coverage of Seve in 1983 through to Tiger’s comeback in 2019.  Leaderboards each year comprise of familiar faces and forces. Contenders presenting their own unique personality and approach.  The grandeur of Nicklaus & Palmer, the flair of Ballesteros & Mickelson, the bravado of Norman and the respectful manner of Crenshaw. As the Masters takes place each year at Augusta, we can follow a continuous story through the decades.

Norman and Faldo in 1996

Augusta is a unique test in golf.  Champions share the purest of motivations.  Artists dedicated to their destiny.  Precision, patience, strategy and courage.  Pretenders pressured to falter by golfing witchcraft. The Masters presents multiple winners: Nicklausx6 Tigerx4 Faldox3, Sevex2, Langerx2, Olazabalx2, Micklesonx2, Crenshawx2, Bubbax2.  Not many ever win a Green Jacket.

Golden Bear wins at Augusta in 1986

And what of golf fashions of The Masters Champions?  By the 80’s, golfing apparel had mostly moved beyond the tweed and plaid of Caddyshack.  PGA Tour players have paid increasing attention to their professional image and style.  Premium golf fashion brands such as Lacoste, Boss and Sergio Tacchini primarily tailored towards exclusive lifestyle.

Danny Willett 2016 Masters Win

The tournament fashions of Olazabal, Couples and Lyle also remainded natural and classic, blending players with Augusta’s azaleas and dogwoods, in harmony with the unique Masters’ atmosphere, aligned for precision performance.

Tiegr’s 4th Masters Win 2019

The evolution of golf branding over the past two decades reflects the dominance of Tiger Woods following his first Masters victory in 1997.  While Tiger remains motivated by the history books of the game, his athleticism and exuberance has resulted in a “progressive” shift towards golf as an inclusive and diverse sport.  Golf is now branded by leading companies such as Nike and Addidas as an athletic pursuit, trending away from its previous country-club underpinning.

Bubba’s first Masters win 2012

These more recent golf fashion trends are supported by advances in golf technology, reducing risk and increasing reward for the more athletic and stronger players.  Golf course designers have assisted by extending golf course layouts.  As a result, success in golf is now trending towards gym time and muscle mass, with talent and touch under threat.

Rory at at Par-5 2nd hole at Augusta

Today’s players are marketed as accessible Sports personalities rather than as aspirational lifestyle icons.  This modern approach risks undermining the players’ natural ability.   Public personas can be projected away from the required mindset for success at Augusta in particular.

DJ at Augusta!

Leading players including Koepka, DJ, Rory, Thomas, Finau, Rahm and Matsuyama appear to be from a similar “stable” in terms of strategy and playing style.   It is notable however that Augusta so far has defended its Jackets from this power advance, while at the same time extending its length to a formidable 7600 yards. Recent Masters Champions have featured instead the more idiosyncratic Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, Willett, Sergio, Reed and of course Tiger.

Sergio’s victory in 2017!

With the 2020 Masters postponed from April, the golfing world anticipates a possible October edition.  Given the far-reaching impact of current world events, leading golfing brands will no doubt be carefully managing their Autumn collections towards achieving Augusta green for their leading stars.

Woodland’s got it at Pebble!

Gary Woodland wins the 2019 US Open

Gary Woodland gained his maiden Major victory at the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach.  The iconic Monterey golf course which played host to heroic wins by Nicklaus (1972), Watson (1982) and Woods (2000) has more recently crowned first time Major winners McDowell (2010) and Woodland this year (2019).

Watson at Pebble Beach 1982

The stirring finish by Woodland on the 17th and 18th greens was well received by fans and commentators alike.  However, discerning golf viewers might be forgiven for concluding that this US Open did not quite live up to the billing!

The Golden Bear at Pebble

As compelling as the landscape is at Pebble, and as vivid are the images of Nicklaus and Watson winning in previous Opens, Pebble Beach these days seems to underwhelm rather than inspire the world’s best players.  Just 3 players contended the lead over the final 36 holes.

GMac at Pebble 2010

Gary Woodland’s game plan on Sunday involved hitting a total of just 6 drivers on 2, 9, 10, 11, 13 & 14, freewheeling home with irons off the tee from holes 15-18.

This conservative course strategy is not only explained by the relatively short length of Pebble Beach within the modern game, but also by the staccato course layout, defending against top players’ usual rhythm and performance.

The challenge at Pebble’s US Open began for players at the one-sided Driving range, which faced into a left to right wind all week!  Brookes Koepka’s coach Claude Harmon conceded that his player decided against spending time on the range to protect against a developing slice!

Brookes Koepka chasing a 3-time US Open win

Hole No.1 tested any such swing flaws with a left to right dog-leg, not long enough to justify more than an iron off the tee and not challenging enough to provide the players with satisfaction for scoring a par or better.  Anyone could make 4 here, immediately targeting the ego of world’s best players.

Onwards to Hole-2, a 520 yard Par-4 which tempted Rory to take driver in search of early gains on Sunday, resulting in double bogey to relegate him from Championship leaderboard.  Early frustration.

Rory chasing Major No 5.

The 3rd offers little respite towards comfort, with a blind tee-shot over trees to a dog-leg left fairway.  A long iron or hybrid would leave a too long second shot, and driver brings bunkers and heavy rough into play.  “What’s the play Caddie?”, “Whatever you feel will work best” might be offered in reply.  The close bond between caddies and modern golfers stressed early on at Pebble.  Caddies returned to their bag carrying duties.

Three gnawing holes in and the 4th presents light relief with a birdie opportunity.  A short par-4, driveable, except with the Pacific on the right and cabbage left.  “What’s the play Caddie?”, “Whatever works for you boss”.  Not the golf course for “caddie-dependants”.  Decision time again early doors.

Most risk-reward holes on the PGA Tour are located on the back nine, when the players can assess how they are playing and where they stand on the leaderboard.   One “make or break” hole towards the end of the round within reach of the comforts and security of the clubhouse.  At Pebble there are 3 risk-reward holes within the first 6 holes, pressurising game plans from the get-go.

Onwards to No.5, a 180-yard par-3 towards the water that should be hit with a low power fade to evade the wind but land softly.   The rough bank on the left offers a bailout for the double cross and is preferred to the pot bunker short right.   Take a par or bogey, breathe in and out, and steer your player towards No. 6.

The 6th is a reachable Par-5 with a cliff face to the right.  The views are scenic like driving through alpine serpentines and mountain passes.  Spectacular, but also hair-raising for those behind the wheel.  It takes the remainder of the journey just to recover from subconscious thoughts of disasters avoided.  Woodland on Sunday went with iron, 3-wood and pitch.  2 putts later and another steady par in the bank offered good time to question if the strategy could have been more hawkish.  Really looking forward to attacking this course sometime soon.

Cliff top golf at Pebble Beach – No 6 & 7

What now Caddie? “A sandwedge 98-yards downhill to a rock hard 7th green.  Don’t go over, and don’t get too clever on the front either”.  Par or birdie, at least that kiddie hole is over.  Where do the ladies tee from?

The 8th also features a cliff, just 240 yards from the tee in the centre of the fairway, although with a possible 30-yard roll-out to the beach from 210.  “Give me a 5-iron… or better make it a 6-iron to be sure.  What do you think Caddie?”…”Yes, but don’t be too far back.. it’ll be 200 plus to the green and that’s not good here”.  Justin Rose roared “roll-out” after his 6-iron tee-shot stuck at the top of the fairway on Sunday before snatching at a 7-iron second to miss the green short right. Pebble slowly crushing.

The 9th is finally a chance to send it out there again.  Woodland accepted the challenge on Sunday but being mindful also of the ocean on the right, snap-hooked it left and got lucky to bogey-finish his first nine.  Could easily have been a double or more. The approach shot is usually on a downhill lie.  Brookes pushed right to bogey.  Not exactly “fun-land” until now, and more of the same to follow on the back nine stagger towards glory.

The Pebble layout is generally joyless for today’s players, other than being associated with a dreamlike nod to past winners.  McIIroy looked beaten approaching the first tee on Sunday as noted by Greg Allen, golf correspondent from Irish Radio/TV.  Patrick Reed snapped his chipper on Thursday.  The strategy employed by Woodland throughout the tournament could not have filled his heart with anything more than a quiet satisfaction for maintaining military discipline.

Pebble Beach is primarily a mental test for the world’s best players.  Can they maintain focus and will in the face of time honored demands and challenges?

And as SKY TV pundit Paul McGinley forecast at the beginning of the week, some players, McIlory included, struggle with this form of examination paper.   Justin Rose too could be questioned for the satisfaction that he was taking by leading on Thursday, and also from his fun back nine jostle with Woodland on Saturday, distracting possibly from the golf course conflict awaiting on Sunday. Rose admitted post tournament that his mindset went missing on Sunday afternoon.

As Woodland recounted in his press conference, it is paramount to control attitude, come what may. Don’t let your guard down until the tournament is done.  Woodland coach Pete Cowan offered to his player that “All men die but not all men live” before the final round.  Woodland also called on his experience this year in Scottsdale with downs syndrome golfer Amy Bockerstette who’s catchphase, “I’ve got this” stuck with Woodland throughout his week.

Gary and Amy at Scottsdale

The USGA should be commended for presenting a traditional golf course with fair but challenging conditions.  If the leading players can once again look forward to the unique challenges that such layouts bring, golf fans can also look foward to savouring more blanket finishes to inspire the world’s best to new heights.

Tiger’s Home!

Tiger Wins the Masters!

At the official Augusta Press conference following the 2019 Masters, the interview opened with a congratulatory and fitting “welcome Home” to Tiger Woods.

Augusta is surely very close to the heart of Tiger.   His first major victory, by 12-shots at Augusta in 1997 announced Woods to the world and was witnessed first by Tiger’s father and life mentor, Earl and mother Kultida.  22 years later and 13 years following Earl’s passing, Tiger is now proud father to two young children, Sam (11) and Charlie (10), who both embraced their father to bring comparisons with Tiger’s family moment first time around.

Tiger and Earl at Augusta in 97

For most sportstars, the passing of time inevitably means that past achievements can be honoured but not repeated. Exhibition matches, after-dinner speaking, coaching and commentary provide for extended retirements. For golfers however, hope can endure with advancing years.  And with golf, perhaps due to individual scoring, beautiful golf course settings and sturdy competitors, we remember indelibly past successes and wins.

Seve at St Andrews 1984

In his later years Seve recreated his 1984 St Andrews Open celebration with a forearm tattoo. Mickelson too has recently captured his 2004 Masters celebration as his professional logo.   These recollections can appear to be a nostalgic tip of the cap to past greatness, but can also a function as anti-ageing cortisone to enhance current performance.

Phil wins at Augusta 2004

For Tiger, the drive to repeat past successes presented instead a mid-life career development plan from the deepest fires of Life Coaching! Tiger’s journey home only required a reconstruction of his body, mind, family, attitude and golf game!  Out went the explosive long game, high tempo lifestyle and elusive personality.  Instead, Tiger reached out for the friendship of his peer group, embraced the wider golf community and presented a more humble and self-inflicting disposition. Friends like DJ and Rickie nursed him through from the first steps of golfing rehab with informal bounce games and fraternal encouragement. The world’s finest surgeons completed back fusions. And the PGA Tour stepped in with a wild card for Tiger at the Ryder Cup and with Captaincy for the 2019 Presidents Cup to make sure.  This was a full scale project to bring home Tiger Woods who went MIA from golf’s top table pretty much since his heroics at Torrey Pines in 2008.

Tiger & Ricky

Tiger’s strategy at the 2019 Masters was a “plodding”, defensive, reel-them-in-slowly approach. Fairway-finders replaced bomber drives. Numerical accuracy replaced flair and flamboyance. Tiger’s game afterall is not comparable to his bravado and fearless play of the 90′s and early 2000′s.    Stray drives on the final round on the 2nd, 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th would support this. No eagles or doubles throughout the Tournament. 4 straight bogeys on the tough Par-4 5th.   Poor shots and pain now expected and accepted.

Bobby Jones and Old Man Par

As the (joint) course designer of Augusta National Bobby Jones often schooled, “Old Man Par” is the only opponent that we should be concerned about on the course, and the scorecard doesn’t allow for pictures or pride.  Tiger appeared to embrace this long-held philosophy at Augusta.

The reception from Augusta’s patrons that greeted Tiger on his final path Home began in earnest on Friday afternoon.  Playing partners Hatong Li and Jon Rahm, both world-beaters on their day, were visibly shaken and indeed swept aside by the incredible reaction to Tiger’s second round charge.

For many of the players on Tour, Tiger is now family..a big brother figure to players like Molinari and DJ, and a fatherly figure for Finau and Schauffele.   For the patrons of Augusta, Tiger is the long-lost and sometimes prodigal son.  Seve preached the same to European Tour press rooms, “we are all like a family on Tour”. Players might well be forgiven for asking the question, how on earth can I beat my “hero Dad” down the stretch at The Masters!

But still they don’t just hand out Green Jackets on sentiment alone.  Those wishing to contend must volunteer as stock for Amen Corner soup on the final day, and only the fairest survive!  Tiger also needed to overcome early bogeys, treacherous putts and charges from some of the world’s best including US Open Champion & US PGA Champion Koepka and Open Champion Molinari.

Tiger’s victory at Augusta is a gift for the generations.  As Brand Snedeker tweeted “thank you Tiger for allowing us to relive precious moments from our youth with our families today”,  Tiger’s win breaks down the generation gap as he has done previously with social gaps and ethnic gaps.

The resounding reaction of the patrons, players and of Tiger himself following victory is then perhaps understandable.  Celebrations resembled scenes in Zaire in 1973 when Ali reclaimed the heavyweight crown from Foreman, claiming “ I am the Greatest” and “I shook up the world”.  Tiger didn’t say as much but he wasn’t half pleased! There is nothing quite like a real life come-back story.

It is indeed a “Win for the Ages” that brings Tiger Woods back Home with the golfing greats and fans worldwide. Well done Team, we got Him back!

Sergio’s Masterclass

Sergio Garcia Masters Champion 2017

The Masters 2017 has produced one of the finest Golf Tournaments of modern times.

Sergio Garcia’s performance on Sunday transformed what appeared be an orderly and imperious victory procession of Justin Rose into a brutal battle around Amen Corner and extra holes.

Sergio was down and almost out.   His remarkable par-5 on the 13th hole resembled a prize fighter staggering to his feet with the aid of the ropes, and hanging on for the bell before staging an all-time comeback to victory through the remaining holes and playoff.

Garcia holes for Par on 13!

Rose’s play was so impressive and resilient through the Masters week, it is hardly fair to form any critique. However, his post tournament tweet “that while tournament golf is tough it remains just a sport”, appeared to be overshadowed by the super human exploits of Sergio that both illuminates and transcends the game.  As Bob Paisley once said in football, “Football is not a matter of life or death.. it’s much more important that that”.

Garcia holes for Masters glory!

Golf, like other individual sports has in recent years become somewhat more of a team game, with at least a small entourage of coaches and family representing and cheering on their man from the players’ box or greenside.   In Sergios “team” at Augusta was his finance Angela, his ever-present father, and his idol Jose Maria Olazabal.  Ollie texted Sergio during Masters week to tell him to believe in himself and also with an invitation to share his own Champions locker at Augusta should Garcia prevail.  Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain for the “Miracle at Medinah” spoke at that time that the Captain’s job is to somehow “reach the Players” and Ollie certainly reached Sergio during Masters week 2017.

Ollie & Seve at Augusta

Sergios other idol of course is the late-great Seve Ballesteros, who would have turned 60 years of age on Sunday. Sometimes all the stars seem to align, and point in one special destination.

Sergio & Angela

Sport is not always fair, and in hindsight, Justin Rose must feel that the golfing gods were on someone else’s side.  Sergio however still had it all to do, and he answered the call in the most spectacular of fashion, almost holing out for an albatross on hole 15 before rocking Augusta when his eagle putt dropped shortly after.  From that moment on, Sergio had breached the defences of Rose, was in close and smelled victory.

Rose congratulates Garcia

Augusta afterall is golfing theatre.  Every hole is a masterpiece, technically and artistically.   The supporting cast of players delight in taking part.  Willett, Kaymer, Couples and Mickelson are all winners from the 2017 Masters, but there can only be one Champion.

Freddie at Augusta

At Augusta, mobile phones are forbidden, as are big screens.  The “patrons” follow the progress of the players throughout the course on traditional wooden score boards, with any positive movements cheered in unison as the boards change numbers.  Runner up Charl Schwartzel relayed after completing his round that Augusta was so charged on Sunday that roars from the 15th were off putting for his group finishing on 18!

The patrons were rooting for Sergio on Sunday, with chants of “Sergio Sergio Sergio” ringing out as a soundtrack to Garcia’s ecstatic reaction on holing the winning put on the first playoff hole.

Bravo to Augusta National and to Sergio’s 2017 Masterclass.

2016 RYDER CUP – TRAVEL PREVIEW (90 Days)

Ryder Cup – 1st Tee!

The 41st Ryder Cup takes place at Hazeltine GC, Minneapolis (Sept 30-Oct 2, 2016), just 15miles from the twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.  With direct flights to Minneapolis Saint Paul Airport (MSP) from London Heathrow and other international airports, travel to the Ryder Cup this September could hardly be easier!

Ian Poulter – 2012 “Miracle of Medinah”

Team Europe under Darren Clarke are seeking a 4th successive Ryder Cup victory, following Colin Montgomerie in Wales, 2010; Olazabal’s Miracle of Medinah, 2012; and McGinley’s Masterclass in Gleneagles, 2014! Travel packages to Hazeltine include 4 and 5-night stays, with a choice of hotels – the Holiday Inn Saint Paul Downtown (4-star) and InterContinental Saint Paul (5-star).

Saint Paul – Mississippi Riverfront

Holiday Inn Saint Paul Downtown is a perfect venue for Ryder Cup groups, with “The  Liffey” Irish Pub perfect for unwinding and talking through the day’s action at Hazeltine. Some of Minnesota’s best attractions are nearby the Holiday Inn. St. Paul is home to the Xcel Energy Center and RiverCentre which host great concerts and the home of the Minnesota Wild hockey team – just across the street from the Holiday Inn.

Tiger & Davis – TEAM USA

InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront is located in the heart of downtown overlooking the Mississippi River. The hotel is just steps away from live theater, renowned museums, memorable dining, and specialty tax free shopping. “Citizen Supper Club” restaurant pays homeage to a byegone era at the Intercontinental with traditional cuisine and freshements, a perfect setting for post round analysis and previews of the following days Ryder Cup matches.

Intercontinental Saint Paul Riverfront

Ryder Cup package prices with Ascot Golf include Hotel, Breakfast, Season Tickets for the 2016 Ryder Cup including Opening Ceremony and practice days, ground transportation from your hotel to and from the Hazeltine, and entry to the Ryder Cup celebration party.  Furthermore, you may upgrade your package to the International Pavilion to allow for hospitality, seating and service throughout the 3 Tournament days.

While the “Brexit” Vote of June 23 has increased the price of golfing holidays to the US for UK golfers, 2016 Ryder Cup packages are unchanged from the beginning of the year for booking in GB£. For those paying in Euro or US$, the price has reduced by up to 15% from early season rates!

And, by booking Ryder Cup 2016 with Ascot Golf before August 15, you will receive a complimentary Ryder Cup Pro Quip Jacket & Hat (His or Hers, Team Europe or USA) for each person in your group!.

FREE Pro Quip Ryder Cup Jacket – Book by Aug 15

Team Europe is taking shape, with a strong GB&I influence, to include McIlroy, Willett, rookies Fitzpatrick and Wood, and veterns Rose and Westwood also expected to make the final 12.  Garcia, Stenson, Lowry and Cabrera-Bello also look likely to join forces to help Europe in their bid to retain the Trophy at Hazeltine.

Team USA is still smarting from Medinah and Gleneagles especially, with Davis Love III given the responsibility to right past wrongs for TEAM USA at Hazeltine. Vice Captains include Tiger Woods as part of a systematic and structured approach that Love hopes will result in victory for the US in Minneapolis.

Ticket packages for 2016 Ryder Cup are limited and will be confirmed on a first-come basis. We hope you can make it for a golfing experience of a lifetime!
